Interpersonal predictive coding, not action perception, is impaired in autism

چکیده
This study was conducted to examine interpersonal predictive coding in individuals with high-functioning autism (HFA). Healthy and HFA participants observed point-light displays of two agents (A and B) performing separate actions. In the 'communicative' condition, the action performed by agent B responded to a communicative gesture performed by agent A. In the 'individual' condition, agent A's communicative action was substituted by a non-communicative action. Using a simultaneous masking-detection task, we demonstrate that observing agent A's communicative gesture enhanced visual discrimination of agent B for healthy controls, but not for participants with HFA. These results were not explained by differences in attentional factors as measured via eye-tracking, or by differences in the recognition of the point-light actions employed. Our findings, therefore, suggest that individuals with HFA are impaired in the use of social information to predict others' actions and provide behavioural evidence that such deficits could be closely related to impairments of predictive coding.

متن کاملA predictive coding perspective on autism spectrum disorders
In a recent article entitled “When the world becomes ‘too real’: Bayesian explanation of autistic perception,” Elizabeth Pellicano and David Burr (Pellicano and Burr, 2012b) introduce an intriguing new hypothesis, a Bayesian account, concerning the possible origins of perceptual deficits in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). This Bayesian account explains why ASD impacts perception in systematic w...
متن کاملImpaired Global, and Compensatory Local, Biological Motion Processing in People with High Levels of Autistic Traits
People with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are hypothesized to have poor high-level processing but superior low-level processing, causing impaired social recognition, and a focus on non-social stimulus contingencies. Biological motion perception provides an ideal domain to investigate exactly how ASD modulates the interaction between low and high-level processing, because it involves multiple p...
متن کاملPerception-action in children with ASD
How do disturbances to perception and action relate to the deficiencies expressed by children with autism? The ability to predict what is going to happen next is crucial for the construction of all actions and children develop these predictive abilities early in development. Children with autism, however, are deficient in the ability to foresee future events and to plan movements and movement s...
متن کاملThe relationship between atypical visual processing and social skills in young children with autism.
The present study examined whether atypical visual processing is related to the level of social skills in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Thirty-eight young children with ASD (29 boys, 9 girls) were included. Atypical visual processing was assessed by coding the number of lateral glances and the amount of object grouping behavior on videotaped observations of the ADOS (aged 35 ± 9...
